biography

Egyptian siblings Aya and Mounaz Abdelraouf founded their brand Okhtein – which means “sisters” in Arabic – as a result of their vision to bring true luxury back to their home country. Sensing a gap in the market for luxury accessories produced in Egypt, Aya and Mounaz launched their line in 2013 with the goal of promoting Egyptian artistry through local manufacturing processes. Both sisters hold degrees from the American University of Cairo, and as lifelong residents of Cairo, they infuse the city’s unique heritage into all of their pieces. Okhtein’s range features studded shoulder and hand bags and ornate minaudières in metallic finishes, and all designs are approached with philanthropy in mind. Featuring handmade touches on many pieces, the brand works with several Egypt-based NGOs that provide opportunities to skilled female workers who fuse clean lines with intricate finishes such as embroidery, hardware and tassels. Okhtein is the 2016 winner in the accessories category of the DDFC/Vogue Arabia Fashion Prize, and their brand continues to grow and gain attention, both at home and abroad.
